I got by with my sub-par training likely only because I had an already established history of long distance running. So can you “healthily” run a marathon without training? Or does it cause more damage than good? I can tell you right now than if you are a brand new runner with no prior experience, then I advise you rethink the idea. Here is a photo of me after finishing the Honolulu Marathon – which I did run in a Christmas suit as well if you can’t tell from the photo: I felt the consequences during my race the next day though. Not the best idea I have ever had but it was definitely worth it. I had actually spent 8 hours on my feet the day before the race volunteering onboard the USS Arizona. I ultimately finished the marathon with a time of 5:24:40, but hey it was an enjoyable 5 hours! Well, I definitely went out too hard with an averaged 8:18 pace through the initial half-marathon, which resulted in me burning out at around mile 16. I was projected to finish at 4:00:00 flat for 26.2 miles, as I had hit the halfway mark at around 1:55:00. Now, my overall time was not pretty, at least for the second half.

I also managed to run this marathon with little to no marathon-specific training at all. The annual Honolulu International Marathon was one of the most entertaining and beautiful race routes I have ever run. I ran my first (and currently only) marathon on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. It is definitely possible to run a marathon without training, but the real question is if it does more damage than good to your body.
